OnePlus One gets official Android 5.0 Lollipop alpha ROM

OnePlus has been quietly developing its own Android 5.0 Lollipop based ROM for the OnePlus One. Following the controversy with Cyanogen licensing in India, the company had announced that it will be providing an early build to customers, which will replace the Cyanogen OS on their devices. The company has now released an alpha build of the ROM on its forums, and is available to download and flash right now. The ROM looks pretty much identical to stock Android Lollipop on Nexus devices but with a few minor changes, such as the ability to have either onscreen or physical navigation buttons. This is an alpha build so there definitely are bugs, many of which are listed on the forum and others no doubt you'll find while using it. There are also clear instructions on how to install the ROM and the things you need to keep in mind, so make sure you read everything properly and know what you're doing before you take the plunge. ViewSonic may be first to market with Iris scanning and recognition technology with V55 smartphone

Rumors over LG and Samsung flagships packing iris scanners were quickly snuffed at the very beginning of the year (2014, that is). Whether such technology was ever legitimately being looked at or not is a matter for debate, but while we ponder that, it looks as though ViewSonic may be ready to introduce a decidedly mid-range spec’d device with a bio-metric feature no other smartphone currently has.

The ViewSonic V55 was apparently planned to be released late in 2014, but the year has passed along, and so it may be a news maker for early 2015. The V55 is said to be equipped with ...

Motorola Moto X 64GB Pure Edition now available

A tweet from Motorola sent out on Wednesday, revealed that the manufacturer has added a 64GB variant of the Motorola Moto X Pure Edition. This is important because the Moto X is offered without a microSD slot that could have expanded the amount of memory on the device. The 64GB model is a Pure Edition exclusive and costs $100 more than the 32GB variant. That makes the price $599.99 for the 64GB version.

An Apple Pay glitch for which Apple had no fix, was forcing the company to issue replacement phones. To train Touch ID, follow the directions given by Betz, which you will find below. The reason why this works is that every time you press on Touch ID, it learns more information about your fingerprint. By adding more data about your print ...

Samsung saw a big bump in scoring over previous years, while Apple continued an ever-so-slight decline, despite the release of the new, and very favorably reviewed, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. What makes this development even more poignant is the fact that Samsung probably will not look on 2014 as a banner year sales-wise.

Customer satisfaction with cellphones in general is up, including brands, and former ...

New smartphone platforms expected to see sales increase in 2015

Newer smartphone platforms, such as Android One, FirefoxOS and Tizen, are expected to see an increase in sales for 2015. Sales will be driven by first time smartphone buyers seeking to replace a featurephone. Thanks to lower prices for smartphones in emerging markets, featurephones have been losing market share. And handsets powered by the newer platforms are usually entry-level models priced in the $50 to $100 range.

According to Gartner, featurephone shipments accounted for 38% of total handset shipments in the third quarter of 2014. The researcher sees that figure dropping to 10% by 2018. ...

Sony intros Limited Edition Xperia Z3 devices, but you probably won't be able to buy any of them

Sony recently released Limited Edition variants of its Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, all three coming with funky designs on their back plates - inspired by the architectures of Berlin, Tokyo, and Warsaw, respectively.

The Limited Edition Xperias were given new looks thanks to the work of three different designers, who’ve gathered city landmarks in the illustrations seen on the rear of each device: “Xperia Z3 for Berlin”, “Xperia Z3 Compact for Tokyo”, and “Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact for Warsaw.” It looks like only 33 of each are available, and you probably won’t ...

TSMC to provide most of the A9 chips for the Apple iPhone 6s; Samsung is the back up

Earlier this year, it seemed that Samsung had wrapped up the annual contest to decide who will provide Apple with the chips for the next iteration of the iPhone. In fact, just a few weeks ago, there was talk that Samsung had already started delivering 14nm A9 samples to Apple. And Sammy's perennial rival for the business, TSMC, will only be able to cut its 16nm wafers in any quantity starting in the second quarter of 2015. Using the 14nm process will allow Samsung to make the A9 chip 20% more powerful, while consuming 35% less battery life than the A8.

But don't cash your tickets in just ...

Microsoft polishes its plans to nix Windows Phone app gap, Android apps may be part of solution

Windows Phone has made a lot of progress in just a couple short years, with much thanks to Nokia’s embracing of the platform and working in its hardware finesse to make the Lumia series and extremely capable smartphone, no matter if it is an entry level Lumia 520 or a banner waving Lumia 930.

Where Windows Phone has always had to make up ground, aside from market share, has been in apps. Indeed, many of the popular applications are available, though the features are usually well behind curve of Android and iOS counterparts.

One of the ways Microsoft has been working to close the ...

Palm name returning to smartphones? Alcatel OneTouch rumored to have purchased brand from HP

You never know. You just never know. At CES 2009, Palm introduced the Palm Pre and it looked like the Apple iPhone finally had competition. Android was still a novelty, and webOS looked like an operating system that could captivate smartphone users. But something went awry for Palm between CES and the launch of the Pre. Whether it was the lack of popular apps for the phone, or just lousy marketing by Palm, the Pre never challenged the iPhone. Instead, by November, the Motorola DROID was launched and Androidmania started.

Like former high draft picks that flopped, both Palm and webOS were ...

Sony said that since becoming available on Google Play, YouTube, Xbox Video and Sony's site, the movie has generated $15 million in revenue. On Sunday, Apple started streaming "The Interview" over iTunes.

In addition to the strong sales it scored online, "The Interview" generated $2.84 million over the weekend from its limited theatrical release. Over ...

John Legere makes his 2015 predictions for wireless; CEO predicts that T-Mobile will pass Sprint

T-Mobile CEO John Legere has made a list of his wireless predictions for 2015. The executive expects 67% of new phones to be sold without a subsidy in 2015, up from 41% sold in that manner this year. T-Mobile was ahead of the field on that change. But Legere says that other improvements instituted by T-Mobile aren't going to be as widely put into play by the other carriers. He still expects overages to be paid by many customers of other carriers, along with ETFs.

Another prediction made by T-Mobile's CEO for 2015, is that his network will go head-to-head with Verizon almost everywhere in ...

Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 arrive in the US in unlocked form

While Samsung hasn't officially launched the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 in the US through any carriers, the two metal smartphones are now available to buy stateside. That's possible because they're being offered by Expansys, a third party retailer specializing in selling unlocked (SIM-free) units. So you won't be signing any long-term agreements with carriers to get them, but on the flip side you will be paying more for the handsets than you may be used to. Because these are unlocked devices, they're priced accordingly. So the Galaxy A3 will set you back $329.99, whereas the Galaxy A5 is going for $409.99. In both cases, you're getting dual-SIM functionality baked in, though as always only one of those slots supports high speed data connectivity. Both phones have 4G LTE, but before you buy make sure to check if your favorite carrier's bands are supported. Information about which bands each smartphone supports is available in their respective listings. It's still unclear whether we'll ever see the Galaxy A3 and A5 released by any US carriers, so if you must have one as soon as possible then this is pretty much your only option right now. Apple patents stylus that will write on all surfaces and transmits images to digital screens

Apple has received a patent for a new stylus or smart pen that will take hand-written texts and drawings and display them on the screen of a device like a smartphone or tablet. This is an accessory that could come in handy in a classroom setting. If a teacher were to use the stylus on a whiteboard in a classroom, an accurate reproduction of the notes could be transmitted to students' tablets.

Interchangeable nibs will allow the user to write in ink or other materials. A capacitive version of the stylus is also mentioned. The latter would be used with the Apple iPad screen in the same manner ...

Oppo R5 will be up for pre-order in India on January 1

The Oppo R5 held the title of "world's thinnest smartphone" for what has to be the smallest amount of time ever. It was announced at the end of October, but by early December the Vivo X5 Max had already overtaken it in this insane race. Still, the thickness difference between the two is barely noticeable, so this doesn't mean that the R5 has suddenly become fat. No, it's the same slender slab it's always been. And now we know when pre-orders for it will start in India. If you want to be among the first people in the subcontinent to own an Oppo R5, then get ready to pre-order one starting on January 1 - that's in just a couple of days. The amount of cash you'll need to shell out for this privilege is INR 29,990. At the current exchange rates that translates into $473 or €389. Considering the upper-midrange specs inside the Oppo R5, that price seems reasonable. Naturally though, this phone's unique selling point will be how slim it is - even if it's not the world's slimmest anymore. An actual release date for the R5 in India has not been revealed by the Chinese company, at least not yet. The Oppo R5 has a 5.2-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front camera, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 2,000 mAh battery. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset with an octa-core CPU, and it runs Android 4.4.4...

Nokia Lumia 735 might not be launched in the US after all (Microsoft no longer lists it on its website)

Announced in September alongside the Lumia 730 and Lumia 830, the Nokia Lumia 735 was supposed to be released in the US at some point, via Verizon and Sprint. Microsoft itself had listed the handset as “coming soon” on its official US website. However, now the Lumia 735 is nowhere to be found on the website - which might mean it won’t be available Stateside after all (at least not following an official launch).

This may have something to do with the fact that Microsoft ditched the Nokia brand from the name of its smartphones (starting with the Microsoft Lumia 535). ...

Infographic shows which Android apps ask for the most permission requests

Before you install an app on your Android phone, you need to give developers certain permissions that allow them to access certain parts of your handset. The developers claim that such access is required in order for their apps to work correctly. Vocativ has put together an infographic showing which Android apps request the most permissions, and which ones specifically want permission to access your phone microphones, contact books, text messages, and call logs.

On the top of the list, security app AntiVirus Security asked for 44 permissions, which might not be terribly out of line for a ...

Android Lollipop has a memory leak bug, fix is on the way

Lollipop may be the latest version of the mobile OS developed by the search giant, but it's clearly not the most stable yet. In fact, the new and handsome iteration of Android has a memory leak bug that has some nasty effects. On Android 5.0.1, the bug kills open apps and forces constant reloading of the home screen. On Google's Android Issue Tracker it's been revealed that a few Nexus devices are affected, such as the Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 4, and Nexus 5. In some cases the bug makes the Android system eat up to 1.2GB of RAM, whereas a normal value would be somewhere around 500MB. So this is a pretty big deal, and quite an annoying bug if you happen to encounter it. The good news is that a fix may have been found, and it will be included in the next software update from Google. The only downside right now is that there's no indication as to when that will begin rolling out. It's unlikely that we'll see a specific update only addressing this issue, so the fix will make it to the next planned release - whichever that happens to be, and whenever that comes out. So if you do suffer from the effects of this bug, you're still required to have some patience. Since Android 5.0.2 is already out for the Nexus 7 (2012), this bugfix will probably be released as part of Android 5.0.3. Source |...
