Welcome the Asus Zenfone 2, a flagship phone with a 64-bit Intel Atom processor and up to 4GB of RAM

Earlier today, Asus took to the stage at CES 2015 to unveil a number of new gadgets, among which was one of the successors to the surprisingly popular Zenfones. Instead of releasing three differently priced models of varying sizes, however, Asus is focusing on a single Zenfone 2 that will come in two versions, the most notable difference between the two being that one of them will offer the whopping 4GB of RAM, while the other will stick with "just" 2 gigs.

But let's dial back. The Zenfone 2 is a Gorilla Glass 3-protected, 5.5-inch device with a flagship-standard ...

Asus wows with the ZenFone Zoom: 3x optical zoom and OIS in a portable body

The outspoken ASUS CEO just got off the stage at CES, leaving us mesmerized not only with the $199 price tag of the ZenFone 2, but rather with the second handset it unveiled, or, should we say, the 13 MP mobile camera it outed, named ZenFone Zoom.

That's right, the handset is the rare bird featuring optical zoom, and it is stuffed in a fairly stealthy body at that, too. The 3x optical zoom is not in the scope of Samsung's Galaxy K zoom series, and yet is a much better compromise between the chunkiness of the K zoom, and the portability of a regular non-zoom phone. Asus announces the Zenphone 2 and Zenfone Zoom at CES 2015

Asus must be on to something. They've been shipping 1.5 million Zenfones a month in Q4 last year, the company's CEO Jonney Shih shared on stage today at CES 2015. But that's not all he shared. He has also unveiled the latest smartphone in the lineup - the Asus Zenfone 2, as well as the Zenfone Zoom - a cameraphone with 3x optical zoom lens. Asus ZenFone 2 is the first phone with 4 GB RAM

Asus has taken the stage at CES 2015 to introduce its newest products, and among them, there's the lovely ZenFone 2. This year's edition of the aggressively priced handset comes with higher-end internals, compared to its predecessor, which positions it against the slightly more premium crowd out there.

While that's perfectly fine with us, we noticed one particular detail in the specs sheet of the ZenFone 2 that may eventually win it some fans from the geeky community once it hits the market in March. Namely, the Asus ZenFone 2 will have a version equipped ...

Lenovo’s penetration in the US smartphone market is still for the most part, largely non-existent. Overseas, on the other hand, it’s a strange tale as the company has considerable presence. Just in time for CES, the Lenovo Vibe X2 Pro is the Vibe X2 from not too long ago, but reborn in a new package that exudes this fun aura fit for any selfie-loving user. Call it a fun and lively smartphone from the maker, the Vibe X2 Pro doesn’t disappoint with its attractive design and the notable optional piece of accessory to make those selfies look even better.

Why aren’t we surprised to find out that Lenovo has entered the wearable space? Everyone, and we mean everyone, has decided to enter the fitness tracking and wearable space. With the Lenovo VIBE Band VB10, it goes in a totally different direction than what we see from the other players, as it’s distinctively different for packing along an E Ink display.

Let’s talk about its design first, which we have to say is arguably one of the ugliest we’ve seen in recent memory. It really reminds us of some cheap knock off of some sort, as everything about it is unsavory. Firstly, the shell of the ...

Some people miss the smaller 4-inch iPhone screens so much, that rumors have started over the last few weeks about a Apple iPhone 6 mini being prepped by Apple. LG G Flex2 is a smaller, curvier Snapdragon 810 beast

LG brought out what will certainly be one of the most innovative products at this year's CES, the curved LG G Flex2. It's more compact and more powerful than its predecessor, more curved and heals faster. Starting off with the display, LG's homemade P-OLED tech has improved over the last year and the new screen has 1080p resolution (up from just 720p). Meanwhile the screen diagonal has shrunken a bit to the more manageable 5.5" (down from 6"). The screen is protected by an LG-developed glass cover that is said to be 20% more durable than Gorilla Glass 3. The back has a special self-healing coating - LG marked a massive improvement by cutting the heal time from 3 minutes to just 10 seconds at room temperature. The body is a combination of multiple curves ranging from 400mm to 700mm radius. The screen is curved to a 700mm radius, which makes for an "immersive" experience (says LG) and brings the mic closer to your mouth. The back is curved to 650mm so it's easier to handle and fit in the pocket. Anyway, the LG G Flex2 will be the most powerful device for a while - it will be the first to bring Snapdragon 810 in consumer hands and it only renders at 1080p (no QHD screen here). The phone will launch with Android 5.0 Lollipop and 2GB of RAM. For storage there's 16GB or 32GB, plus a microSD card. The camera has carried over improvements from the LG G3, including OIS+ and Laser Auto Focus. The camera itself is a 13MP shooter with dual-LED flash, a 2.1MP camera is on the front. Gesture shot makes selfies easier by recognizing a hand-gesture from 1.5m away. Gesture view will easily preview the selfie once captured. The connectivity enjoys up to 300Mbps downloads over 4G LTE, but has 3G too (42Mbps). Locally Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.1 with Apt-X handle wireless connectivity. There's a microUSB 2.0 port with SlimPort for TV out and FastCharge to quickly fill the 3,000mAh battery. The LG G Flex2 will come in Platinum Silver and Flamenco Red, first in South Korea at the end of the month followed by other regions. LG introduced the world to flexible and “self-healing” smartphones a little over a year ago with the G Flex. The six-inch P-OLED display, while a little light on resolution, showed us that devices do not necessarily need to be ultra-rigid in an effort prevent breakage from being dropped.

As a first effort, the G Flex was also meant to be an indicator of where design trends eventually go with a lot of consumer products. Things start off square-ish, and as manufacturing methods progress and technology advances, edges get softer, corners rounded, and shapes become smoother.

Samsung Galaxy A5 enjoys a bath in 24K gold

Vietnamese gold-plating shop Karalux has chosen the Samsung Galaxy A5 as its latest target to fill in the company's large collection of gold smartphones. The Galaxy A5 launched last month and is Samsung's first aluminum-clad smartphone in its mid-range lineup. Karalux has done the entire metal body of the phone, but has left the plastic patches on the top, back and bottom used for reception. The company says it takes 4 hours to remove the panel and gold-plate it. You can even specify a custom design at the back. The gold-plating costs $200 (VND 4 million), which added to the phone's SIM-free price of $410 makes for a reasonably affordable gold-plated phone. The Samsung Galaxy A5 packs 1.2GHz quad-core CPU and 2GB of RAM, while the 5" display boasts more modest 720p resolution. Physical measures of the Samsung Galaxy A5 are 139.3 x 69.7 x 6.7mm, while its weight tips the scale at 123 grams. The handset is powered by a 2,300mAh...

The 310 was announced almost exactly a year ago and now the 320 comes with essentially the same specs. The phone is basically the same size and keeps the 4.5" FWVGA screen (that's 480 x 854px). It's powered by a quad-core 1.3GHz processor again (no info whether it's a Cortex-A7 or not). It will come with 512MB RAM or 1GB depending on the region, the internal storage is similarly 4GB or 8GB. At least the Desire 320 will launch with Android 4.4 KitKat. Regardless of which storage version you get, you'll want to insert a microSD card. The 4GB version leaves barely you 1.5GB left over. The rest is pretty similar though, a 5MP camera with 1080p video capture (impressive for an entry-level device). On the front is the same VGA camera as before. For connectivity there's quad-band 2G and 3G with HSPA going up to 21Mbps. The phone uses microSIM cards. Anyway, there's Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS as can be expected. The 2,100mAh Li-Po battery is good for 12 hours of talking on a 3G network and 690 hours on standby. The HTC Desire 320 will be released in the UK, presumably other regions too. Source |...

CES 2015 preview: here's what to expect

CES 2015 is upon us and we couldn't be more excited. We already brought you the first batch of announcements and we will be covering various press conferences during the next couple of days and now would be a good time to dive in the rumor mill and sum up what we expect to see from the major players and their events. Samsung The Korean tech giant is the largest player in the mobile market, as it even managed to surpass Apple in the struggle for the best brand in terms of customer satisfaction. Samsung definitely has a lot going on and has been generating quite the media storm, even more so in the past few weeks, just before CES. Various leaks and rumors point to the unvailing of the Galaxy S6 at the Samsung conference set for January 5, but chances are the device will only be shown at the event behind closed doors. It's anyone's guess what us, the general audience will get to see at the event in terms of phone hardware. The Korean giant will most likely be concentrating on another new concept, it has dubbed Internet of Things (IoT). The ambitious concept is a joint effort with the Google-owned Nest company and aims to bring a unified platform for home automation and connected devices. The push seems to be towards internet connectivity for nearly all future home appliances and with the help of IPv6 addressing support, which is the only feasible approach for introducing such an enormous new device base to the web. Another key point in Samsung's presentation is sure to be the future of its TV lineup. We expect to see a definite move towards the company's own Tizen OS in all future smart TVs. Curved displays are also likely to be featured in the mix, but undoubtedly with improvements over what was showcased a year ago. LG LG has also been pretty busy in the development department. Rumors hint that the company will officially announce the LG G Flex 2 at CES 2015. If this is to be believed it will take a place among a very select few devices to feature a curved screen, one of which is the original LG G Flex from 2013. The new handset will undoubtedly bring an array of hardware upgrades over its predecessor, with rumors suggesting a high resolution OLED screen and a durable shape-preserving body. In the TV realm LG will definitely not fall behind rival Samsung with the ground set for an array of new OLED products for 2015. Among these we should see a 55-inch UHD curved OLED panel as well as 55 and 65-inch UHD ones in the ultra-light Art Slim series. Desktop monitors will also probably make their way to the presentation floor with an expected trio of 34-inch gaming-centered LG displays. Another TV cornerstone for LG will surely be the new quantum dot technology. The company already jumped the gun and announced a 4K TV set, which we are sure to hear more about at CES. Sony The Japanese tech company has also been hinting at exciting new announcements planned for CES 2015. A couple of days ago the company released a rather perplexing teaser video, which definitely excited, but left a lot to the imagination. The promise of a "new world" is tantalizing and from what can be made out from the cryptic video, there should be much anticipated news of Android 5 updates. Other than that the possibility of a new line of ultra-thin TVs is very real and is further backed-up by the description of the Sony press event, scheduled for January 5: " The latest products and technology in 4K UHD, Hi-Res Audio, Digital Imaging and Mobile.". This all sounds promising enough, but the new Xperia Z4 line of devices is what truly excites eager fans. Four devices are already rumored(Sony Xperia Z4, Sony Xperia Z4 Compact, Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet and Sony Xperia Z4 Ultra) but their appearance at this year's CES is somewhat doubtful. If specs rumors are to be believed the new array of devices is dependent on the Snapdragon 810 SoC, which is still suffering from low availability. At this point it is anybody's guess as to whether Sony will manage to pull it off and push the new offerings. HTC HTC is also center stage with all the recent information and leaks on the successor to the HTC One (M8), the HTC One Hima. If rumors are to be believed, however it might just be in pretty much the same shoes as the new Sony lineup, as it should also be powered by the scarce Snapdragon 810 chipset. That being said, and...

Microsoft unveils Nokia 215 and 215 Dual SIM

Microsoft still hasn't given up on feature phones, the new phone even bears the Nokia name. The Nokia 215 comes in single and dual-SIM version and offers essential Internet connectivity plus amazing battery life for just $30 (with no contract, but before taxes and subsidies). The Nokia 215 has Opera Mini for general web browsing and handles social networking with the Facebook app and Facebook Messenger, Twitter too. Bing Search and MSN Weather are also on board. All this web access happens over 2G and EDGE (dual band) on a 2.4" QVGA screen (240 x 320px). This is a Series 30+ device so it's a throwback to a bygone era. Additional connectivity includes Bluetooth 3.0 with SLAM (for easy file sharing). There's also FM radio connectivity and the Nokia 215 will last 45 hours. 50 hours if you're playing MP3 audio, there's a microSD card slot supporting 32GB. The 1,100mAh battery is good for 20 hours of talking and 29 days of standby for the single-SIM model. The dual-SIM lasts 21 days. For $30 you even get a camera - a 0.3MP one but still a camera. It records video at QVGA resolution and 15fps framerate. There's an LED but it's on top of the device used specifically as a flashlight rather than a camera flash. The Nokia 215 and 215 dual-SIM will go on sale "in select markets" starting with Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. That is unless the Lumia 530 beats it there first, a Windows Phone that often gets heavily discounted (dipping to $50 with a...

NVIDIA announces Tegra X1 with 1 teraflop performance

NVIDIA has announced their brand new mobile processor for 2015, the Tegra X1. The X1 is the first mobile processor in the world capable of 1 teraflop floating point performance, which almost puts it in the same league as desktop class GPU and current generation gaming consoles. The X1 has a new octa-core CPU cluster, consisting of four Cortex A57 and four Cortex A53 cores with a custom CPU interconnect and cluster migration. The four A57 cores have 2MB of L2 cache between them and the A53 cores have 512MB. On the GPU side, NVIDIA has turned to using its latest generation Maxwell architecture, which we saw on their flagship desktop GPU this year, the GTX 980. Although not quite in the same league performance-wise, the 256 CUDA core GPU in the X1 is twice as powerful as the Kepler-based GPU on the K1. It's also capable of 1 teraflop of floating point performance. To put that into perspective, the Xbox One is capable of 1.3 teraflop while the PS4 can do 1.84 teraflop. The X1 has a 64-bit wide LPDDR4 memory capable of peak memory bandwidth of 25.6MB/s. It is also capable of outputting 3840x2160, that's 4K at 60fps, to an internal or external display with support for HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. X1 also has improved codec supports and can decode VP9, VP8, H.264, H.265 (10-bit) at 2160p60, along with 600 MP/s (megapixels per second) JPEG encode and decode. Tegra X1 also supports all major graphics standards, including Unreal Engine 4, DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5, CUDA, OpenGL ES 3.1 and the Android Extension Pack. Along with mobile use, NVIDIA also has planned other applications for the X1, namely in automobiles, with its newly announced NVIDIA DRIVE car computers. The DRIVE PX computing platform will be used for autopilot applications, where two X1 processors will take input from 12 onboard cameras for features such as Surround Vision that lets you see a seamless 360 view outside of your car on your screen and Auto-Valet for automatic parking. DRIVE CX will power your car's infotainment system, such as navigation, digital instrument clusters, audio system, HVAC, and driver monitoring. Mobile devices running Tegra X1 are expected in the first half of 2015 with automobiles leveraging the DRIVE PX and CX in the second half of 2015. Source 1 • Source...

Xiaomi sold more than 61 million phones in 2014

Xiaomi sold more than 61 million smartphones in 2014. The CEO of the $45 billion tech heavyweight, Lei Jun, delivered the good news in a letter to the company's employees. The company's sales have grown by a mind-boggling 227% compared to 2013. At CNY 74.3 billion (about $12.1billion), Xiaomi's 2014 revenue before tax has risen 135% from the previous year. Unsurprisingly, the Chinese giant did quite well internationally. Xiaomi sold 1 million Mi smartphones in India in less than one month. The company plans to enter more countries this year. The letter also confirms that the company will release its already leaked, next flagship smartphone later this month on January 2015.
